What is the Car Boot Sleepout?

Car Boot Sleep Out is NNC's most important fundraiser of the year. It's an immersive, confronting overnight experience designed to increase empathy and raise awareness about the devasting impact of homelessness. This year's theme shines a light on the impact homelessness has on women and children. From couch surfing, living in parks and sleeping in cars, women and children who experience homelessness are some of the community's most vulnerable across Australia. And it's closer to home than you think.

On 13 May, Car Boot participants will convene on the rooftop of Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre for an interactive and educational program that includes activities and hearing directly from people with lived experience of homelessness. And of course, everyone sleeps in their car as a symbolic gesture in solidarity for those who have no choice each and every night.

Together, we can change this!

Homelessness: A crisis for mothers and children

Homelessness is hitting closer to home than ever, especially for women and children. Many are fleeing domestic violence, facing skyrocketing rents, or navigating the devastating impacts of financial instability. These families—often invisible—are the fastest-growing group affected by homelessness in Australia.

At our Drop-In Hub, we see this crisis every day. Mothers who once managed to make ends meet are now reaching out for support, often for the first time. Homelessness can happen in an instant—one job loss, one health crisis, one relationship breakdown, or one rent increase is all it takes to upend their lives.

By joining the Car Boot Sleep Out, you’re helping us provide vital support for women and children in need. Together, we can offer safety, stability, and hope to those who need it most.

Sleep out in your car to shine a light on this growing crisis—and help us put homelessness in the rearview mirror.

We’re all in this together.
